Lore is the information that helps you understand someone's history or a subject's background. In social conversation, personal lore might be an unexpected old hobby, a family story or an explanation for a recurring joke. Calling it lore treats ordinary life as if it were a fictional universe with a backstory.
What’s the tone?
Curious, playful or knowingly dramatic. A lore dump can imply that the explanation went on too long.
When and how to use it
Use it when a new fact makes someone's story more interesting or easier to understand. Ask for the backstory if the speaker seems happy to share. When someone calls your explanation a lore dump, check whether they want the long version before continuing.
In a conversation
Original examples to illustrate the expression.
I used to run a tiny radio show from my school library.
Unexpected Mira lore. What was your first broadcast about?
Easy to misread
Lore is not automatically gossip, and being called lore does not prove a story true. In games and fiction it refers to world-building rather than personal history. Lore drop and lore dump describe sharing the background, not a separate meaning.
A little context
The word is much older than social media. Its playful extension to personal histories is documented by Merriam-Webster and a Mental Floss article dated May 6, 2026. The recent date records continuing explanation of an established expression.
